The Happiness KAL/MKAL

Hello my dears,

I am hosting my first ever knitalong!! I've wanted to host a knitalong/makealong for quite some time, but I had to decide on a theme and figure out when I wanted it to happen. And now I've done both! Here's how it is going to work:

Timeline: January 2, 2018 - March 31, 2018

  • WIPS allowed
  • Double dipping is highly encouraged
  • Use the official hashtag on Instagram and other social medias: #happinesskal2018
  • Post a finished object photo in the FO thread by April 1 at 9:00 AM EST

What is this KAL all about? Well, I've recently been reading three extremely inspiring books by Gretchen Rubin: The Happiness Project, Happier At Home, and Better Than Before. Combine this with my growing awareness of the importance of mental health and the idea for the KAL was born. The entire premise of the KAL is to knit or make something that makes you happy.

That's right. This isn't just for knitters! It's for all of my creative friends. Sewing, crocheting, painting, cross stitch, drawing, etc. It is not only allowed, but totally welcomed! The only rule is that it must be something you truly want to make. No obligations or guilt tripping allowed. It can be for somebody else or for yourself. It doesn't matter.

Not only have I been inspired by the aforementioned books, but also by a couple of my knitting friends: Nikki of the Tea & Possibilities podcast, and Becky of the S{tr}inging It Together podcast. Both of these ladies have discussed the importance of mental health in their podcasts or on their Instagram accounts and I couldn't help admiring their bravery.

It is SO hard to admit that you don't have everything together. That your life isn't the Pinterest perfect view that others can see it as being. And I want to applaud that. Life is messy. It is difficult. And we shouldn't be trying to hide behind a facade of perfection. That is not an example I want to give. I have been doing a load of thinking over the past several weeks and I am going to be making some changes to the blog and podcast in order to better reflect my genuine, quirky, messy personality.

And that is what this KAL/MKAL is all about. Being real. Remembering the importance of mental health. To be happier.

So knit a shawl, sweater, or socks. Sew a dress, shirt, or cardigan. Paint a picture. Make something that you love. And every time you look at that thing, I hope you smile!

I'm considering doing a read-along of The Happiness Project to go with this MKAL and possibly a pen-pal or one time swap thingy. (Totally stealing Nikki's idea!) Let me know if either of those things are something you would like to participate in. If there is enough interest I would love to do either or both! I can't wait to see all the gorgeous makes!!!
